Long time ago, the defeated warriors of 
      Heike handed down the culture of Kyoto to Gokayama village. 
Gokayama 
      washi is one of the examples of this culture.  
In the feudal age of the 
      lord of Kaga (Now Kanazawa) as a yearly tribute and used for the paper 
      money of its fief. Since then, Gokayama washi developed under the 
      auspicious care of the Kaga-clan.  
Today, the quality of Gokayama washi 
      is recognized by the exclusive selection in the restoration of Katura 
      Imperial Villa in Kyoto and also especially well-known for its 
      various colors and variety of washi used for 
      chigiri-e.

The beginning of the Chigiri-e is 
      uncertain and did not date back long ago. 
It is very natural, however, 
      by looking the various colors of washi in front of your eyes, one may 
      think of using washi instead of paints to draw pictures@with washi. 
       
Today Chigiri-e work is highly esteemed both nationwide and also 
      overseas for its artistic value.  
Tear washi into the shape of flowers 
      or leaves by your own fingers. And paste then on a thick paper such as a 
      post card or a greeting card.  
You will appreciate of your own handmade

¡Travel Guide to 
      Gokayama 
Gokayama is situated in the 
      mountainous area of western part of Toyama Prefecture, which is located in 
      the middle of Honshu Island facing the Japan Sea.  
Gokayama is famous 
      for the thatched roof Gassho style houses evaluated as a world heritage by 
      UNESCO.  
The wisdom of the ancestors who bear the severe natural 
      circumstance were handed down today to create unique mountain village 
      culture such as Gassho style houses, folk songs and dances and handmade 
      washi paper.  
Once you visit Gokayama,you will be eased by the 
      beautiful nature and nostalgic atmosphere of old and good
